    Description

Jules Verne Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 4" x 4.5", Amiens; November 2, 1897. Written in French, sending his autograph: "Miss: You asked me for some lines for your autograph collection. That can never be refused and even if they are insignificant, they nonetheless tell you of my heartfelt regard." Matted and framed with a black and white photograph of Verne and an English translation.

Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a Frenchman considered by many as the father of science fiction. After studying law in Paris, he wrote opera librettos and plays before he moved on to write works of fiction involving science and invention. With such works as Around the World in Eighty Days (1873), Journey to the Center of the Earth (1874), Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea (1873), and Mysterious Island (1875), Verne forecast with remarkable accuracy many scientific achievements of the 20th century. He anticipated flights into outer space, submarines, helicopters, air conditioning, guided missiles, and motion pictures long before they were developed.

Condition: Letter is lightly toned with minor fading. Otherwise very good.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
