    More Information:

Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French considered by many as the father of science fiction. Born in Nantes, France, Verne ran away to sea at the age of 11. After he was sent home in disgrace, he vowed to travel only in his imagination. He carried out this pledge in more than 50 works that combine scientific fantasy and adventure. After studying law in Paris, he wrote opera librettos and play before he moved on to write works of fiction involving science and invention.  With such works as Around the World in Eighty Days (1873), Journey to the Center of the Earth (1874), Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea (1873), and Mysterious Island (1875), Verne forecast with remarkable accuracy many scientific achievements of the 20th century. He anticipated flights into outer space, submarines, helicopters, air conditioning, guided missiles, and motion pictures long before they were developed.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
