    Description

John Stuart Mill Autograph Letter Signed "J.S. Mill." Three pages, 4.5" x 7.25", East India House, January 16, 1856; to "My Dear Lewis." In part, "…I have so much to occupy my time and thoughts that it is quite impossible for me to say how soon I shall be able to take in hand, still less finish an article on India…Can you kindly obtain for me from the "Waste" two sets of the sheets of the article on Grote?" John Stuart Mill is today remembered as brilliant philosopher and advocate of Utilitarianism; in his day, however, he earned his living as a senior official of the East India Company. George Grote, the philosopher, was a dear friend of Mills, and active too in the Unitarian Society.
The letter is in very fine condition; the usual folds are present; the signature is bold and dark! Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
