John Muir Autograph Manuscript Page from Chapter V of his Book, The Mountains of California. One page, 8.25" x 11.5", n. p., n. d. [circa 1894]. Headed "III / The Passes," the page reads, in full: "The sustained grandeur of the Alps is forcibly illustrated by the fact that throughout their whole extent there is not a single pass lower than 8,000 feet above the level of the sea. In a distance of a hundred & forty miles, between Lat 36° 20' & 38°, the lowest I have yet found exceeds 9,000 feet, while the average height upwards of 11,000. A carriage road has been constructed through what is known as the Sonora Pass, on the head of the Stanislaus and Walker's rivers, the summit of which is 9,607 feet above the sea. Substantial wagon-roads have also been built through the Carson, & Johnson passes." Pencil notation in upper right corner. While it is noted in the manuscript that this is the beginning of chapter 3, it was published in the book as chapter 5. On the verso, Muir has written: "Passes of Alps / Full Copy (nearly)."

Folds are detached, but archivally repaired and reinforced on the verso. Working manuscripts of Muir's books are scarce, making this piece particularly attractive.

John Muir (1838-1914) was a Scottish born naturalist whose environmental activism helped preserve some of the United States' most beautiful natural areas, including the Yosemite Valley and Sequoia National Park. His first book, The Mountains of California, published in 1894, was based on notes he took during his years of wandering through the Sierra Nevada Mountains as well as the geography and history of the region. In 1892, Muir founded the Sierra Club, whose motto is "Explore, enjoy, and protect the planet." The Sierra Club is still very active in environmental conservation today.
