    Description

John Greenleaf Whittier Autograph Lot comprised of four fine pieces as follows: 1) Autograph Letter Signed, "John G. Whittier". 2 pages, 4.15" x 6.55", Amesbury Massachusetts, November 6, 1867. In part, "…I never advise any one to depend on authorship for a living: anything is better than that. But it is very pleasant to be able to express one's self in rhythmical numbers & perhaps is "it's own reward" …"

    2) Autograph Letter Signed, "John G. Whittier". 2 pages, 4.25" x 8.5", Amesbury, Massachusetts, December 3, 1855. To the legendary writer and abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe.

    3) Autograph Letter Signed, "John G. Whittier". 3 pages, 5" x 8", Amesbury, Massachusetts, June 24, 1869. The content of this letter contains some of his musings on life and happiness. It reads in part, "…Thee have not lived for thyself alone-and there are many grateful hearts to cherish the recollections of thy kindness and self sacrifice. When I think of myself life looks very and & disconsolate, but when I think of others, of dear friends whom I love, here & beyond, I am almost happy…"

    4) Card Signed, "John G. Whittier". The card measures 3.5" x 2", and is signed in blue ink.

Whittier was a poet and transcendentalist and, like Stowe, an early proponent of abolishing slavery. His poem "Maud Muller" features the famous line, "For all sad words of tongue and pen/ The saddest are these, 'It might have been.'" The condition of these items is very fine on average. The Harriet Beecher Stowe letter has two newspaper clippings taped onto the letter as well as the address portion of the envelope. The signature card is laid down on a folder. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
