    Description

John Greenleaf Whittier Autograph Letter Signed "John G Whittier". Three pages of a bifolium, 4" x 6", Amesbury, Massachusetts; October 28, 1870. Written to his cousin and fellow Quaker, Joseph Cartland, the letter reads, in full:

"It is a long time since I have seen or heard from thee & Gertrude. How are you? - Well, I hope in body & soul. I hear you have bought a place in Providence. Perhaps, that is as well, all things considered, though I wish we were nearer each other. My health has suffered from the [illegible] heat of the summer! & I have not been very strong this fall: having had several ill turns. I shall get to Boston for a week or two soon; & if I feel strong enough shall look in on you at Providence. Can thee give me Ann Wendell's address? Will a line directed to her at Marchford reach her? Pray write & let me know how you are situated as respect your new home. With much love to Gertrude..."

Condition: Usual mail folds with light toning along the edges. "J.G. Whittier 1870" has been written on verso in an unknown hand. Overall very good.
