John Ericsson Autograph Letter Signed "J.Ericsson". One page, 7.75" x 9.75", New York, June 17, 1862. A letter referencing the Rumford Prize he had recently received from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for his invention of the hot air engine. In full:

"I have received a letter from Prof. Hansford informing me of the award of the Ac. Of Sciences, together with the enclosed. I have to thank you for sending me the extracts from the Barton papers which no doubt acted powerfully on the scientific gentleman. In order that you may be fully parted I enclose copy of a letter which I have just written to Prof. Hansford. I feel quite curious to see what James has said of my unworthy self in the 28 columns to which you allude. In advance I feel grateful beyond expression. James is one of the most sterling men I have ever known, the fact therefore of his taking the trouble affords me far more pleasure than anything he may say of me".

An established naval engineer with an important resume, Ericsson is most noted for designing the USS Monitor, launched three months before this letter was sent.

Condition: Usual creasing from mail folds, else good. Together with a brief biography of Ericsson written in an unknown hand and an engraving.
