James Russell Lowell Autograph Letter Signed "J.R. Lowell". Two pages of a bifolium, 5.25" x 8.25", Elmwood, Massachusetts; November 9, 1854. In a letter addressed to a fan, "Miss Th. A.A. Dawson", Lowell sends his thanks for her compliments as well as a few samples of handwriting and an unpublished poem. Lowell humbly writes, in full:

"it is not often that a request for an autograph gives one anything like pleasure - so those that do are all the more welcome. I don't know how I can answer all the pleasant things you say of me, except by blushing & feeling that I do not merit them. However, being thought too much of is so far of advantage to an honest man - that it will make him try to get up to the level of the opinion. I can only thank you for all the kind things you say, & hope that the next book I publish will come nearer deserving them. If you are at all interested in mere handwriting, perhaps you will care to have some scraps which I enclose. If not, they will burn very well. I send you also two stanzas of my own - never printed - not for their merit, but their subject. I remain very truly yours"

James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) was an American romantic poet, critic, editor, and diplomat. He was well known both in the United States and overseas, and moved in circles with fellow poets Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Cullen Bryant, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. (known as the Fireside Poets).

Condition: Light toning at edges with usual mail folds. Signature is very bold. Overall very good.
