James R. Randall "My Maryland!" Poem Signed. Five pages, each about 8" x 10", Baltimore [Maryland], December 14, 1894. James Randall (1839-1908), known as the "Poet Laureate of the Lost Cause" for this popular Civil War poem, pens in ink all nine verses and signs at the end. The first verse reads:

"The despot's heel is on thy shore,
His torch is at thy temple door, Maryland!
    Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle queen of yore,
    Maryland! My Maryland!"

The poem was first published in a New Orleans newspaper, the Sunday Delta, on April 26, 1861, but later during the war, it was set to the tune of O Tannenbaum and became a favorite song among Confederates. When General Lee retreated following the Battle of Antietam, a Confederate regimental band played "My Maryland!" Today the song is the official state song of Maryland. At the end of page five, Randall has written, "Originally composed in April 1861 at the Fausse Riviere, Parish of Pointe Coupee, La, and copied, Dec'r 14, 1894, in Baltimore, Md. For my friend Capt. H. P. Goddard. [Signed] James R. Randall." Toned sheets with some staining and tearing. The lower margin of sheet four has separated. Each of the five sheets is tipped onto a slightly larger, stiffer, and brittle backing. Both paper and backing exhibit chipping. Also included is a poem entitled "If" and signed by E. L. Renggin[?], dated 1887 from Ft. Walla Walla, Washington Territory.
