Jacob De Cordova Autograph Tax Document Signed "J. De Cordova". One page, 8.25" x 7", November 3, 1848, Houston, to Charles Rose regarding taxes on five tracts of Texas land in Milam County, Texas. The document is endorsed by Rose at the bottom. Jacob De Cordova (1808-1868) was responsible for bringing many new settlers to Texas because of his entrepreneurial activities. To publicize Texas, he gave speeches about the state in New England; those speeches were then transcribed and published in Europe. He purchased large amounts of Texas land which he sold to the new settlers. In 1849 he helped lay out the town of Waco from some of his own land holdings. De Cordova was also a noted author and cartographer. He compiled the Map of the State of Texas in 1849, which was also influential in attracting settlers to Texas. He later wrote several books about the state and was involved in the publishing of several Texas newspapers. With folds; fine.
