Description
"I am an unbeliever, yet I should like to believe."
Jack London Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 12" x 8.75", Manchuria, May 26, 1904. In full: "My dear Mrs. Ellis: Yours of March 29th just received. Rather late in the day. I am an unbeliever, yet I should like to believe. If it interests you, look up one of my short stories called 'The White Silence.' This story is in my book, 'The Son of the Wolf.' In it there is a description of the white silence and of the struggling of the spirit of man & the groping. Sincerely Yours, Jack London."In early 1904, author Jack London sailed for Yokohama and Korea to report on the Russo-Japanese War for the Hearst newspaper syndicate. His coverage of the war, his essays and short stories provided readers a detailed view of the social and political conditions in East Asia at the turn of the last century. While there, London sent this interesting letter to fellow writer Clara Spalding Ellis, discussing faith and the human spirit.
London had published three books and nine excellent short stories the year before. The most successful of these early books, The Call of the Wild, sold 10,000 copies on its first day of issue and would catapult the strapping San Franciscan onto the world stage. During this time, he also rushed to complete a new novel, among the most important he would ever write, The Sea Wolf. One month after this letter was written, London's wife Bessie filed for divorce on grounds of desertion. Outstanding content during a time of adventure and upheaval in the budding author's life. Faint toning. Letter and original transmittal envelope are hinged along the left margin to a larger sheet measuring 13.5" x 9.5".
