Ivan Turgenev Autograph Letter Signed "I. Turgenev". One page of a bifolium, 4.75" x 7.25", "50 rue de Douai", Paris; circa 1874. Writing to an unknown colleague in French, the novelist says that he will be unable to accept an invitation to lunch due to having been up all the night before with Didie (Claudie Viardot) and her baby. Didie was the daughter of Pauline Viardot, a famous soprano singer and love of Turgenev's life. Some scholars have speculated that Didie was possibly his daughter, but this has never been proven. Regardless, Turgenev was very close with the family, and doted on Didie. When he was diagnosed with cancer of the spine in 1882, Didie and her sister, along with Pauline helped nurse the dying author.

Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist, known best for his work Fathers and Sons (1862), which took a pointed look at the growing generational schism between generations in Russia and the developing nihilist movement. When Fathers and Sons was published, Turgenev faced both critical and political backlash, causing him to spend more time in Europe where his work was more greatly appreciated. His final novel, Virgin Soil (1877), was also harshly received by his native country due to its commentary on Populism. Subsequently, Turgenev imposed his self-exile and refrained from writing about Russia's political state. He resided, for the most part, in Europe for the remainder of his days.

Condition: Flattened mail fold, with light toning throughout. Some soiling along the edges. Small tears at the top left corner.
