Ivan Turgenev Autograph Letter Signed "Ivan Tourguineff". One page, 5.25" x 8.25", no place; October 12, [18]79. The letter is written in black in on Turgenev's personal stationary. Writing to an unknown colleague in French, the novelist says that he is looking for something and will speak to him at 5 o'clock the next day.

Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist, known best for his work Fathers and Sons (1862), which took a pointed look at the growing generational schism between generations in Russia and the developing nihilist movement. When Fathers and Sons was published, Turgenev faced both critical and political backlash, causing him to spend more time in Europe where his work was more greatly appreciated. His final novel, Virgin Soil (1877), was also harshly received by his native country due to its commentary on Populism. Subsequently, Turgenev imposed his self-exile and refrained from writing about Russia's political state. He resided, for the most part, in Europe for the remainder of his days.

Condition: Letter has flattened mail folds and is toned around the edges. Light foxing throughout. Very minimal chipping at left vertical edge.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
