    Description

Honoré de Balzac Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages with blank integral, 4.25" x 5.5", undated, written in French. Addressed to a Mr. Costas, sending him a copy of one of his books: "... I am forwarding you this as token of my gratitude, I wanted to bring it myself but I am so busy with work which never leaves me a moment... because the second volume was published I will give it to you and ask that both volumes be passed to Mr. Bajoche...de Balzac." Although undated, the letter may have been written in 1839, the year the second installment of Illusions Perdues (Lost Illusions) was published. Balzac was a prolific writer, and was known to for long hours at a stretch. Bajoche is possibly le Contre-Amiral Bazoche, Governor of the Isle of Bourbon, to whom Balzac had dedicated "The Commission in Lunacy" (from La Comédie Humaine) in 1836.

Condition: Lightly toned, with horizontal mail fold. Small amount of ink transference, else fine.
