Honoré de Balzac Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5.25" x 8.5", January 4, 1837. A letter to his mother (in French) seeking assistance: "Dear mother. Sign this lease by putting 'approved' to be written herewith [illegible] and send it back to me to Madame widow Durant rue No. 13 by courier, because it is urgent, it has to be registered the soonest. / Kisses [illegible], I am not well and always as busy / Honoré."

With hurried postscript: "If you can send it more promptly by stagecoach send it Auguste will go tomorrow at noon at [Illegible somebody's place name]."

Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) was a celebrated French novelist. He published in 1822 a series of tales under the names of Horace de Saint Aubin and other pseudonyms, and in 1829 brought out in his own name a historical Romance entitled Les Chouans. His next work Physiologie du Mariage and Le Peau de Chagrin were very successful and were soon followed by a series of novels and tales entitled La Comédie Humaine intended to delineate every phase of French Society. Among the most popular of these may be named Le Père Goriot, Eugénie Grandet and Balthasar Claes. Despite his literary success, chronic illness and poor business decisions often caused him to turn to his mother, who was from a wealthy family, for support. Their relationship was often strained as a result.

Lightly toned with usual mail folds. Some paper loss along the left margin does not affect text.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
