Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Autograph Poem Signed "Henry W. Longfellow," one page, 7" x 4.5". No place, May 15, 1868. Fair copy of the seventh of 12 four-line stanzas of his poem "The Fire of Drift-Wood" handwritten by the poet on watermarked paper: "The very tones in which we spake/Had something strange, I could but mark;/The leaves of memory seemed to make/A mournful rustling in the dark." Originally written by Longfellow at Devereaux Farm, near Marblehead, Massachusetts, "The Fire of Drift-Wood" was one of 20 poems published in The Seaside and the Fireside (Boston: Ticknor, Reed & Fields, 1850). Longfellow noted in his journal on November 28, 1849, "Received of the publisher one thousand dollars for the first edition of The Seaside and Fireside." Eight days after writing this stanza for an admirer, Longfellow was honored at a parting dinner at his editor James Fields' home by his friends, including Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louis Agassiz, Richard Henry Dana, Jr., and James Russell Lowell, prior to his May 27th departure by steamer from New York City to Liverpool, England. Folds, mounting remnants on verso. Fine condition.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
