Harlan Ellison: Two Typed Letters Signed. The first, 8.5" x 11", on his personal letterhead, Sherman Oaks [California], July 31, 1970, to Julia Coopersmith of Doubleday & Company regarding contracts with the publishing company. In part: "Here are your contracts, amended and signed. Please note the changes...I'll explain why each of them, so you won't think I'm being a pain in the ass..." He then goes on to humorously explain each change. Letter two, also to Julia Coopersmith, is three pages, 8.5" x 11", on his personal letterhead, Sherman Oaks, September 20, 1971, complaining about the treatment of his entries in the book "The Hugo Winners, Volume II." Both entertaining reads. Smoothed folds, else fine.

    More Information:

In part: "While it makes me unhappy to have to lay this on you, since you asked, I must reply honestly. No, I am not happy...after busting my ass to make sure your office and Isaac had the preferred texts of my three stories..." What follows is a point by point assessment of the mistakes as well as a complaint of the company overall. "Dear, dear Julia. I know full well you didn't need any crap like this dumped on you today. (If I know Doubleday at all, you had a rotten day, and added tsuriss [sic] is something for which you would not lobby.) but you made the error of asking...and someone ought to tell you that Doubleday has once again displayed it production ineptitude. I hold no animosity toward simply happen to be the responsible editor in this deal, so you get the crap."
