George Sand Autograph Letter Signed "George Sand." One page, 5" x 6.75" (sight), Nohant; February 23, 1854. Written in French and addressed to an unknown recipient. A translation of the letter reads in full: "If someone tried to ridicule you in connection with me and amused himself by telling false and stupid tales to those miserable fabricators of biographies, it must obviously have been someone whom I have not seen for a long time, because I cannot imagine who would drag in your name unless it were for sheer viciousness. I feel prompted to give him the lie and were I sure that by referring to you under a different initial you would pretend to have pointed out the man to me, I could then more fully explain the high esteem in which I am holding you and the good memories I've always kept for you. In case you also wish to give the lie, do not feel constrained. I shall gladly prove that you are quite right in counting on my gratitude and my affection." Matted and framed with a lithograph of Sand to the overall size of 18.75" x 14.75".

This pipe smoking feminist writer used this pseudonym for her novels, while her real name was Amandine-Lucile -Aurore Dupin. Growing up in an aristocratic family, and eventually marrying into the title of Baroness, Sand was no stranger to high-society mores and the limitations they placed on women. After leaving her husband, she took to wearing men's clothing, which allowed her to move more freely around Paris and gave her access to many social activities she would have otherwise been excluded from. Her most famous novels include: Indiana, Consuelo, and Rose et Blanche.

Condition: Flattened folds. Lightly toned throughout with darker toning at the edges. Light foxing throughout. Some faint ink transference from where the letter was folded.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
