George Sand Autograph Letter Signed to Victor Hugo with Transmittal Envelope and Image of Sand. "George Sand." 5" x 8", four-page letter on two integral leaves of Sand's personal embossed letterhead, handwritten in French, Nohant, April 2, [18]64. A letter to Victor Hugo during his exile at Hauteville House on the island of Guernsey. George Sand, whose real name was Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin, never met Hugo, but the two authors regularly exchanged letters. Sand was ahead of her time, and sought to break social boundaries placed on women.

After leaving her husband, she took to wearing men's clothing, which allowed her to move more freely around Paris and gave her access to many social activities she would have otherwise been excluded from. Along with the letter is a matted print of Sand, wearing a top hat and men's clothing. 3.5" x 5" (sight), matted to the overall size of 7.75" x 8.75".

Condition: Letter and envelope are in good condition with minimal age-toning. Handwriting is bold and clear. Mat print is also in good condition.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
