    George Frederick Root Autograph Musical Quotation Signed. One page, 7" x 4", Hyde Park, Illinois, 1881. Below the first two handwritten musical bars of his most famous composition, "The Battle Cry of Freedom", the composer writes, "Twenty years hence in different scenes, this may serve to remind Winifred [Norwood Shapker] of her old neighbor. [Signed] Geo. F. Root." On toned paper removed from a notebook (remnants along left edge).

    Included is a printed song sheet entitled "Patriotic Songs" (four pages containing fourteen songs, including "The Battle Cry of Freedom"). "Sung at the Loyal Legions meetings" has been handwritten in the top margin. Also included is a printed memorial to Root following his death in 1895 (two pages extracted from Memorials of Deceased Companions of the Commandery of the State of Illinois, Military Order of the Loyal Legion). Both pages are lightly toned.

    American songwriter George Root (1820-1895) is best known for composing "The Battle Cry of Freedom" (1862), "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp the Boys are Marching" (1864), and other popular Civil War songs. He was a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legions.
