George Francis Train Autograph Notes Signed (Two). Included are two items: (1) A 4.25" x 2.75" card on which he has written: "Good for One Thousand/ Dollars at the next/ Centennial/ Geo. Francis Train/ Madison/ Square/ P.E./ 50!" The P.E. 50 was his way of writing the date based on his own personal era; since he was born in 1829, this card was signed in 1879. Very fine. (2) A 6.25" x 3.75" sheet signed in alternating blue and orange pencils: "One Daily Meal/ Of Fruit and Grain/ And you will long life/ sure retain!/ Geo Francis Smith/ Madison/ Spring". Fine with one edge tear not affecting text. This eccentric businessman, author, and presidential candidate was a strong supporter of the women's rights movement; he financed a newspaper, The Revolution, that published Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. From the Judith Kaplan collection of women's history.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
