    Description

George Bernard Shaw Autograph Note Signed with Related Autograph Papers. A small group of papers relating to Shaw's will. The note is signed "G.B.S.", one page, 3.5" x 5.5", Welwyn; August 3, 1944. In a short note addressed to an unknown recipient, Shaw angrily discusses the subject of his will. It reads in full: "A Shavallergic billionair [sic] could not suppress me longer than 25 years after my death. Under my will he could do it for 5 at most, and not even for that unless he kept copies of some sort on the market. Do not waste your time and mine telling me how to make my will and conduct my business. I know more about both than you do; and anyhow it is not your job nor that of your confounded Societies. And if you persist in sending my communications to the press, you will be excommunicated."

The note is accompanied by two handwritten documents, both measuring 7.75" x 9.75. One is written in shorthand. The second, dated circa 1946-1947, appears to be a draft list of people and things Shaw wished to include in his will. There are details as to where various books will go and how much money will be given to various friends and family. These papers and the signed note are matted and framed, along with a black and white photograph of Shaw, to the overall size of 29" x 29.25".

George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was an Irish playwright and political activist. He is best known for his plays Saint Joan, Man and Superman, and Pygmalion, the latter of which was adapted into the musical My Fair Lady. He passed away at the age of 94.

Condition: The signed note is toned throughout. The other two pages have flattened folds with paper loss at the top edge, possibly from being torn from a larger volume. All three are slightly warped.
