    F. Scott Fitzgerald Autograph Letter Signed "Fitzgerald". One page, 8.5" x 13", Hendersonville, North Carolina; circa November 1935. Written during a trying time in the author's life, the letter is addressed to Mrs. Isabel Owens, Fitzgerald's secretary. Fitzgerald had recently abandoned his apartment in Baltimore, due to noisy piano playing by his neighbor, and was attempting to break his lease. He was also desperately in need of money and was attempting to sell stock in order to support his finances. The letter reads, in full:

"Gradually feeling better but no plans at this moment. Here is $50 to carry on with. Scotty is with the M.B. Flinns [sic] in Tyron & well taken care of for four or five days anyhow. You will get a wire from Wilmington or word from a lawyer in Balt. relative to appartment [sic] squabble. Still intend to bluff out of lease if humanly possible. In any case can't work there possibly with that music. Send me what ms. you have when you have a real address, also any news. More later. Fitzgerald. Have sent 1st National that stock cert with instructions to sell. Find out what they realized on it."

Isabel Owens was not only Fitzgerald's secretary, but also his wife Zelda's companion and daughter Scotty's governess. Fitzgerald had been living in Baltimore since 1932 in order to be close to his wife while she was being treated for schizophrenia at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Flynns, Maurice and Norah, were close friends who often cared for Scotty during difficult times in the Fitzgerald's lives, and upon whom he based his story "The Intimate Strangers". It was around this time that the famous author started writing his essay "The Crack-Up", which was published in Esquire magazine in February 1936.
