    Description

    Emile Zola Autograph Letter Signed "Emile Zola". Two pages, 5" x 8", Médan, France; May 25, 1882. Written in French to an unknown recipient, untranslated. The two pages are matted and framed along with a portrait of Zola to the overall size of 24.5" x 14.75".

    Émile-Édouard-Charles-Antoine Zola was born in Paris in 1840. After working as a clerk and a journalist, he began to write short stories and then later, novels. His sequence of 20 books called Les Rougon-Macquart was described in the subtitle as "the natural and social history of a family under the Second Empire." At the time this letter was written, Zola had just finished publishing his tenth novel of the Rougon-Macquart series, entitled Pot-Bouille. In 1898, he was imprisoned for his exposure of the Alfred Dreyfus affair, but escaped arrest by fleeing to England.

    Condition: Flattened mail folds, with some light edge toning. Overall Very Good.
