Edward Everett Hale Quotation Signed. "Edward E. Hale." One page, 7.5" x 5", July 5, 1886. The quote is the motto of the Lend a Hand Society and reads in full as follows: "Look up and not down; Look forward and not back; Look out and not in; Lend a Hand."

Hale (1822-1902) was an author, Unitarian minister, historian, and abolitionist. The Lend a Hand Society was a non-sectarian organization founded after the publishing of Hale's Ten Times One Is Ten. In the story, ten people meet at the funeral of a mutual friend only to discover he had helped every one of them. In turn, they decided to help their fellow man in the hopes that helpfulness would blossom and spread around the earth. Slight toning on the edges, but in very fine condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
