Edna St. Vincent Millay Typed Letter Signed "Vincent". One and one half pages, 5.5" x 7.5", Hotel Albergo Palozzo stationery, Rome, November 18, 1921, to Ruth Elder, with mailing envelope. Millay thanks Elder for the photos she had sent and questions whether a music manuscript Millay mailed her had ever arrived. Very fine with some light toning and flattened folds; the envelope has had the front upper right corner torn off. From the Judith Kaplan Women's History Collection.

In part: "Thank you so much for sending me the lovely pictures... Of course I am sicker than ever now that I did not see the performance... if the manuscript is irrevocably lost you need not feel called upon to commit suicide, or anything like that... I hope that the play will be given again somewhere sometime, so that I can see it, but if not, the pictures which you sent give me very lovely hints of it all." The play that Millay cites is The Lamp and the Bell, one she wrote for the Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration of the Organization of the Associate Alumnae of Vassar College, her alma mater. She was in Europe working as a writer for Vanity Fair at the time and did not get to see the performance.
