    Description

Edna St. Vincent Millay Autograph Letter Signed "Edna Millay". One page, 5.25" x 8.25", New York, circa 1928. Addressed to Susan Glaspell: "I have just read your beautiful Brook Evans, & I must write at once to thank you for having written it, - even though it really broke my heart, & made me cry so that I thought it would kill me. Some time when I see you I want to talk about it with you, & tell you a few of the many things in it that filled me with the most profound admiration for you - all kinds of things, terribly true, or so simply & beautifully true."

Millay (1892-1950) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American poet, writer, and feminist. In 1923, she married Eugen Jan Boissevain, the widower of the famous suffrage martyr, Inez Milholland. In 1928, the year this letter was written, she met and began an affair with poet George Dillon. The sonnets that sprung from this intense relationship resulted in some of her best work featured in the collection titled Fatal Interview (1931).

Condition: Lightly toned, usual mail folds, slight foxing.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
