Edgar Allan Poe Autograph Letter Signed "Edgar A. Poe," one page, 6.5" x 4.5" visible. New York, April 29, 1848. In full, "Dear Sir, It gives me great pleasure to comply with your very flattering request for an autograph. Respectfully, Yr Ovt. St." A rare handwritten letter from the father of the modern detective story whose works include the short stories The Cask of Amontillado, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Purloined Letter, and The Tell-Tale Heart and the poems "Annabel Lee," "The City in the Sea," and "The Raven." This letter was most probably written from his cottage in the Fordham section of The Bronx, New York, which still exists today as a museum. His wife Virginia had died there a year before he wrote this letter; Poe died a year later visiting Baltimore. It was in this cottage that Poe wrote some of his most famous works including "Annabel Lee," "Eureka," and "The Bells." The letter bears a light rectangular tanning from prior framing. It has been matted with an engraved portrait of Poe and framed under glass to an overall size of 18.25" x 11.5". While ten volumes of Poe's writings were published during his lifetime (he died in 1849 at the age of 40), as well as his contributions to magazines and newspapers, the first collective edition of his works did not appear until after his death. A rare letter from him responding to a "flattering request for an autograph" from a fan would make a truly appropriate addition to an autograph collection. Fine condition.
