Cornell University Collection Comprises: (1) Chauncey M. Depew. Autograph Letter Signed: "Chauncey M. Depew", one page, 5" x 5.75", np, nd, but docketed on verso January 14, 1864. To Ezra Cornell, informing him that he has "compared the resolution in the Session Laws in reference to printing Reports of Agricultural Society with the written copy...They are the same...." At the time, Depew, later president of the N.Y. Central Railroad and U.S. Senator, was New York Secretary of State. (2) John Horner. Manuscript Letter Signed: "John Horner", two pages, 8" x 10", New York, August 22, 1868. To Ezra Cornell on stationery of the Executive Office, Western Union Telegraph Company, notifying him that "the Western Union Stock fell back a little yesterday but not to the limit given the broker to buy on your account...it is not at all unlikely the Bears may sell it down further...." (3) Jacob G. Schurman. Typewritten Letter Signed: "J. G. Schurman" as President of Cornell University, one page, 8" x 10.25", Ithaca, New York, February 10, 1914. To Isaac Markens, New York City, responding to his request for his "opinion in regard to Lincoln's Gettysburg Address...I never read the Gettysburg Address without being deeply moved by the pathos of the sentiment and the exquisite felicity of the style." Schurman was President of Cornell from 1892-1920. (4) Andrew D. White. Three Autograph Letters Signed and one Typewritten Letter Signed: "And D. White", all but one from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., each 5" x 8", dated 1873 (three pages, front and verso, in support of "the Morrill bill...to promote the establishment in every State of Colleges for Scientific & Technological instruction...Do what you can & as speedily as possible & then earn the thanks of all those interested in a new & better education in this country.)", 1882(Two pages, front and verso, letter of introduction for Colonel George W. Williams, written in Saratoga Springs), 1888 (one page, acknowledging a letter he has received), and, typewritten, 1892 to Hon. Abram S. Hewitt (one page, thanking him for information he has sent as he prepares to leave for London); Hewitt had served as Mayor of New York City from 1887-1888.Andrew D. White served as the first President of Cornell University from 1867-1879, then as U.S. Minister to Germany (1879-1881, 1897-1902) and Russia (1892-1894). After the 1862 Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act was passed, White helped secure the new institution's status as New York's land grant university, and Cornell University was granted a charter through their efforts in 1865, founding Cornell University on Cornell's estate in Ithaca, New York. Ezra Cornell had made his fortune in the telegraph business as an associate of Samuel F. B. Morse, having gained his trust by constructing and stringing the telegraph poles between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland. After joining with Morse, Cornell supervised the erection of many telegraph lines, earning a substantial fortune as a founder of the Western Union company. Fine condition. Seven items.
