Clayton Rawson Typed Letter Signed "Clayton Rawson" with related letter. New York; April 5, 1948. One page, 8.5" x 11", Mamaroneck, New York; April 5, 1948. Typed on CLUE magazine letterhead and addressed to A.H. Norton at Popular Publications. Rawson writes about republishing two of his old stories. It reads in part: "One thing I forgot to mention when I talked to you last week and which might help you in checking back on those two 'Mr. Mystery' stories is that they would have run under the pen-name, 'Stuart Towne'. When you do run them down I'd be interested to know what issues they appeared in; I never did see them in print..." He also writes his hopes that the publisher's office could make an exception regarding payment, "...There are four kids in this family all of whom have healthy appetites and the combined resources of bank and checking account at this moment will buy groceries (and nothing else) for another ten days at the most. I hope Mr. Steeger will take that into consideration and can see his way clear to making an exception in this case..."The related letter from Norton, dated April 22, 1948, relates the company policy not to reprint stories in the magazine. Clayton Rawson (1906-1971) wrote a number of short stories under the pseudonym Stuart Towne. His "Mr. Mystery" short stories were published in August 1940 in Detective Fiction Weekly, and were later compiled into The Magical Mysteries of Don Diavolo (2005). With mail folds and edge toning. Rawson's signature in pencil is slightly smudged. The related letter is darkly toned, with a tear at the right edge. Good.
