    Description

Dickens accepts an invitation to attend the anniversary dinner of the Artists' General Benevolent Institution

Charles Dickens Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages of a bifolium, on embossed, black-bordered letterhead, approximately 4.5" x 7", "Gad's Hill Place, Higham by Rochester, Kent," January 14, 1862. Following the great success of his recent works, A Tale of Two Cities (1859) and Great Expectations (1861) the famous author was in constant demand for lectures and reading engagements. Here, he accepts an invitation to speak at the annual dinner of the Artists' General Benevolent Institution. Directed to H.W. Phillips, the letter reads in part: "...The Artists' General Benevolent Institution has a claim upon my sympathy and service to which I must readily respect. I will preside at their anniversary Dinner and do my best for them, and it is a duty and a pleasure. The day you mention in your letter, the 29th of March, would suit me very well as I shall be reading in London at almost that time... I am Dear Sir, very faithfully yours, Charles Dickens." Dickens's prominent signature is highlighted by a large flourish beneath.

In addition to his numerous readings, lectures, and appearances, at the time of this writing Dickens not only served as the editor and publisher of the weekly British literary magazine All the Year Round, he was also its major contributor. Professional strengthening at interior fold. Letter is very boldly penned and has been affixed to a heavier backing sheet measuring 9" x 11".
