Boris Pasternak Handwritten Doctor Zhivago Text. Boris Pasternak, Soviet poet and writer, virtually unknown by name in the Western World. His greatest work this side of the International Date Line is his novel Doctor Zhivago, which, tragically, represented his views of Soviet Russia. This lot features 23 handwritten pages of Doctor Zhivago; from Chapter 11, which he calls, "The Forest Warriors." In most American editions this chapter is translated as, "The Forest Brotherhood." On the cover page which precludes the 22 pages of text he writes his name, "Boris Pasternak;" the entire manuscript and signature are all in Russian (Cyrillic alphabet). The first few lines of the manuscript read, "…It was more than a year since Yuriy Andreyevich had been taken prisoner by the partisans. The limits of his freedom were very ill defined. The place of his captivity was not surrounded by walls; he was not under guard, and no one watched his movements. The partisan force was constantly on the move, and Yuriy Andreyevich moved with it. It did not remain apart from the local population through whose lands and settlements it passed; it mixed and indeed dissolved in it…" Pasternak's words would come to captivate a nation of Westerners who had never before had such a glimpse of the Russia that lay beyond its democratic sight. Aside from this novel, Pasternak is best known in Russia for his collection of poems, My Sister - Life. This group of poems has influenced generations of Russian writers, including the Futurists and those who sprung from those roots. His greatest work appeared in 1921, and was entitled Rupture, which many poets and critics called a work of pure, unbridled inspiration. This lot offers a wonderful chance to personally view Pasternak's work in his own hand; it is a chance few have ever had.

The manuscript is in very fine condition; each page is housed in a plastic sleeve; the pages are slightly yellowed, but all writing and annotations are bold and dark. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
