    [Mark Twain]. Samuel Clemens Autograph Letter Signed "S.L. Clemens." One page, 5" x 8", Elmira, New York, August 25, n.y. Addressed to an unknown recipient, the noted author and humorist declines an invitation, in full: "I am sorry to say that I shall not be able to comply, such miscellaneous work as I may chance to do being already promised elsewhere."

    Condition: Mat burned along the upper, lower, and right margins. Two spots of ink smudging in the text do not affect the signature. Small .25" tear at the upper and lower edges. Light foxing and ink ghosting at the lower edge. A purple strip of paper is seen on the verso running the length of the right edge from previous binding.
