[Mark Twain]. Samuel Clemens Autograph Letter Signed "SL Clemens." One page on black-bordered mourning paper, 4.25" x 6.5" (sight), "23 Tedworth Square [London]," May 4, 1897. Clemens was living in Europe at the time he penned this letter, one year after the death of his daughter, Susy, an event which caused him great pain and likely the reason for this particular stationery, accepting an invitation for a visit, in full: "I shall be very glad indeed to come With many Thanks I am Sincerely Yours [signed] SP Clemens." Double matted with two period photocards, produced in 1897 by Twain's wife, Olivia Clemens, bearing images of Twain in a rocking chair, smoking a cigar, and short quotations from his travelogue, From the Equator, to an overall size of 18.75" x 10.5". Very slight soiling spot near the lower right corner, else a fine piece.
