[Mark Twain]. Samuel Clemens Autograph Letter Signed "S. L. Clemens." Two pages, 5.25" x 8", Hartford [Connecticut], April 13, 1888, to a "Mr. Metcalf" regarding a magazine article he was commissioned to write, but would be unable to due to his wife's ill health, in part: "When I left you I found that Mrs. Clemens's attack was dipththeria [diphtheria] - & that she was perilously ill. . . . I have been in the sick-room pretty much ever since, & shall continue to be, for some time, yet, for the progress toward recovery is very slow." As if that were not enough, he further reports that "one of the children has gone to bed ailing" that very afternoon, adding: "These are not good time in which to write magazine articles." But, true to fashion, even so serious a situation brings out the humorist in Twain, who concludes by saying: "I believe there is only one detail in Mr. Arnold's article that I meant to especially answer - & I mean to answer that one in so friendly a way that it may even be called affectionate - loving - sloppy." Folds. Slight damage to the upper right and lower left corners.
