[Malcolm X]. James Baldwin Autograph Letter Signed and Photograph. One page, 8.25" x 11.75", n.p., December 30, 1971. Writing to a man named David, author James Baldwin, who signs this letter simply as "Jimmy," comments on his latest work, in part: "I have completed, delivered, and intend to produce, at last, my Malcolm X story, '-one day, when I was lost' - This involves a battle which I may not win, but which I have no . . . intention of losing. No doubt, the newspapers will keep you posted as to that. Cross your fingers." In 1968, Baldwin was hired by producer Marvin Worth to write a screenplay based on The Autobiography of Malcolm X, co-written by Malcolm X and Alex Haley (the author of Roots). Baldwin was joined by screenwriter Arnold Perl, but Perl died in 1971, a fact which Baldwin mentions in the postscript of this letter: "Only work has kept me away so long, and you know who the work is for. And: Arnold Perl is dead." Baldwin took the script and turned it into the book, One Day, When I Was Lost: A Scenario Based on Alex Haley's "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," which was published in 1972. Director Spike Lee later used the Baldwin-Perl script, with his own revisions, for his 1992 movie Malcolm X.

With a 10" x 6.75" black and white photo showing Baldwin, in a checked shirt and sunglasses, standing on a platform. To his left, near the middle of the image, is a lectern upon which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is speaking.
