[George Eliot]. Mary Ann Evans Lewes Autograph Letter Signed. Four pages of a bifolium, 4.5" x 7.25"; The Priory, North Bank, Regents Park; "Wednesday Evening". A long letter regarding renovations of their home at Witley. In part: "We have been to Witley today & are in despair about the smell of paint in the drawing room. To make this disappointment of our chief wish the more exasperating the drawing room floor has, contrary to our orders, been recoloured over the greater part of its surface, thus increasing the sources of evil smell entirely without purpose... Mr. Lewes begs me to ask you whether you know of any neutralizer for the smell, better than ozionised water...The rooms are still in the same state as regards the papering, & we shall be much obliged if you will inquire into the chances of the paper being finished in the next few days..." Signed "ME Lewes."

Mary Ann Evans Lewes wrote seven novels under her pen name, George Eliot. Although women published under their own names during her lifetime, Evans may have wanted her fiction to be judged separately from her widely known work as an editor and critic. It is also speculated that she hoped to avoid the scandal that could have resulted because of her relationship with George Henry Lewes, a married man. Evans considered herself married to Lewes and even used his surname as is evidenced in the letter offered here.

Condition: Flattened folds, the recipient's name has been crossed out. A spindle hole goes through both sheets of the bifolium in the top left corner. Soiling on the last page with pencil annotations at bottom as well as at the top of the first page. Rust stains from a paper clip appear at right margin of the last page.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
