Description[François-Marie Arouet]. Voltaire Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 7.5" x 9", September 11, 1763. A letter to poet and playwright Adrien-Michel-Hyacinthe Blin de Sainmore, in part: "Sick and old, almost blind people, are bad correspondents. I have not kept any of those fleeting things you mention. They are bagatelles for the amusement of society for a few days which one forgets. Once people collected those little works from the days of Voiture and Sarasin when they were [illegible]... but now one is blooded by them. If I find some I will gladly send them to you, even if they are not worthy..."
Voltaire (1694-1778), a French Enlightenment philosopher and prolific writer, produced plays, novels, essays, and scientific and historical works. Five months before writing this letter, Voltaire published his famous Traité sur la tolerance (April 1763), which accused Christianity of being the biggest perpetrators of religious persecution.
