A Stunning Engraving of Dickens at Gad's Hill, Signed by the Artist

[Charles Dickens]. Samuel Hollyer. Large Proof Engraving of Charles Dickens in His Gad's Hill Study. Executed circa 1875, this intricately detailed piece shows Dickens as Hollyer would have encountered him five years earlier, seated at his famous desk in his Gad's Hill study, deep in thought, and enveloped by his personal library and his library table. Two windows allow for light, and show a neighbor's thatched-roof house in the distance. The engraving measures approximately 24" x 19", and is matted to an overall size of 27.5" x 22.25", ready to frame. The mat is cut to reveal the pencil notations of the artist on the lower right margin of the engraving, which read, "S Hollyer" and "This proof was Exhibited at the Centennial building Phila. 1877." The engraving is in near fine condition, with some minor dampstaining to the lower margin, affecting part of the second pencil notation. The engraved area is clean and bright. A substantial display item fit for the wall of any serious Dickens collector, signed by Hollyer, a Victorian contemporary known for his engravings of the famous authors of his time, as well as bookplates, and other works relating to book illustration.

Charles Dickens moved to his now famous country home in Kent, Gad's Hill Place, in June 1857. He wrote many of his later works in the study there, including A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, Our Mutual Friend, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Gad's Hill also allowed Dickens to host a Who's-Who of Victorian-era writers, notably Hans Christian Andersen, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Wilkie Collins. Dickens enjoyed thirteen wonderful years at Gad's Hill, before succumbing to a stroke in 1870 in the house's dining room. From the Victor Gulotta Collection.
