Robert T. McCall: Large Signed Color Pastel Sketch with a Collection of Six Signed Sketches on First Day Covers. A 9" x 12" drawing of a launching Space Shuttle on the wings of a white dove. Signed at lower edge: ""Robert T. McCall 7-07". Also included in this lot are six unaddressed, cacheted (various) covers with May 21, 1981, first day cancellations for stamps in the 18¢ U.S. Space Achievement series. All feature signed ("Robert T. McCall") ink sketches with various space themes on the fronts. On one, he has added pastel coloring. His unsigned business card also included. All are in excellent condition.

The spark that ignited Robert McCall's (1919-2010) passion for space flight came from the science fiction pulp magazines that he read in his youth at Columbus, Ohio. Seeing an exciting group of low-flying biplanes roaring over his hometown when he was a child and WWI surplus bombers at the Ohio State Fair a bit later led to his eventual joining of the Army Air Corps during WWII. After the war, he worked as an advertising and illustration artist, first in Chicago, then New York; much of his art dealt with aviation. In the mid-1950s, he travelled extensively through an Air Force program in which he would donate the paintings made from these trips for exhibit at various bases and facilities around the world. When NASA was created, they initiated a similar program allowing McCall to have unprecedented insider's access to all the manned flights. He was there and documented the American manned space program like no other artist ever has. His vision and talent remains unsurpassed.
