Includes Express Mail cover that flew on Space Shuttle Challenger.

Robert T. McCall: Collection of Six Signed Sketches on Philatelic Space Covers. A wonderful group of original signed ("Robert T. McCall") sketches by the dean of space art, three in ink and three pastels, all on various U.S. space covers. The key piece is a flown "Space Mail" cover celebrating NASA's 25th Anniversary with "Launched Aboard Challenger/ August 30, 1983" and "Returned to Earth Edwards AFB, CA/ September 5, 1983" cancellations tying a $9.35 Express Mail stamp to the cover with a cachet of the mission insignia. McCall has painted a desert sunset scene across the entire front of the cover. The serial number on this cover is "289254" as stamped on the verso. According to U.S.P.O. records, this is one of the covers that definitely flew on this mission. The five other covers included in this lot are all First Day Covers for various U.S. space-related stamps. All of the sketches are space-related. McCall's unsigned business card also included. All are in excellent condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
