Rembrandt Peale Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages of a bifolium, 4.75" x 7.75", Philadelphia; June 10, 1860. A letter to an unknown patron about the completion of a painting of a coastal scene. It reads, in full:

"I have sent to the charge of Messrs. Williams and Everett, a picture which I finished last autumn - A sea piece much enlarged from a small study by Schmidt - scene of Brighton in England. This translation from the small study makes it effectively as an original. I painted it with much pleasure as the most natural effect of water I had ever seen. Having, through your polite attention, a lively conviction of your taste for our art, I take the liberty to request you will look at my Picture to see if it may be worthy to be added to your collection, as my production at the age of 82."

The painting Peale makes reference to is his "Coast Scene". Peale (1778-1860) is best known for his realistic paintings of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other early American politicians. In 1787, as a boy in Philadelphia, Peale had met Washington, whom his father had recently painted. In 1795, at the age of seventeen, he painted the president himself, in what would be his first sitting of many with Washington. Peale produced over 600 paintings over the course of his life, and continued his artistry almost up until the time of his death. He passed away at the age of 82, just four months after this letter was written, on October 3, 1860.

Condition: Usual mail folds and light soiling. Some mounting remnants on verso. Overall very good.
