Pierre-Auguste Renoir Autograph Letter Signed "Renoir". Three pages of a bifolium, 4.75" x 6.5", n.p.; no date, but with original envelope stamped "July 1895". Written in French, Renoir speaks of being situated at Louveciennes for a while through the autumn, and of looking forward to meeting his friend in Paris. A short translation, addressed to Paul-Antoine Bérard, reads in part: "I am working quite well and I have models here and things are going nicely. What bothers me is the obligatory sea bathing which my family insist upon and which despite my horror of being close to the ocean I am forced to swallow. I am counting the days to return to the studio...I was very busy before coming to Louveciennes. It is necessary for me to work hard. I am growing old and no one knows what can happen. I am becoming reasonable..."

Renoir's parents had moved to the small town of Louveciennes in 1868, and the artist often came to stay with them. It was here that Renoir painted many of his outdoor scenes, and he loved the village so much that he introduced many of his fellow artists to the place. Famed impressionists such as Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Camille Pissarro all came and produced works of art in this western suburb of Paris. The recipient of the letter is Paul-Antoine Bérard (1833-1905), a patron and close friend of Renoir who had invited him to stay at his country estate multiple times. Bérard commissioned some of Renoir's most celebrated studies of children, including all four of Bérard's children in "Les Enfants" (1881).

Condition: Usual mail folds, with very light soiling along spine. Original envelope has usual wear and soiling, with slight paper loss from opening. Overall very good.
