    Maurice Denis. Autograph Letter Signed.
"Maurice Denis." Two pages (of a bifolium) in French, 4.25" x 7", Saint-Germain-en-Laye; November 21, 1902. In this letter to an unnamed correspondent, Denis appears to be congratulating the recipient for writing an article against pornography in art [English translation], "Please allow a painter who loves nudes passionately, and has proved it in multiple exhibits which you surely remember, allow him to congratulate you with all his heart and all his energy on your courageous article in L'Echo. I am the father of three daughters and am very committed to Christian ideals, I tremble that honest folks are beginning to confuse with other things the beauty of flesh that we love so much. At a time when well-intentioned imbeciles want to make art accessible to the masses with just a few lessons, it is remarkable that the confusion on the topic is so widespread between aesthetic aims and pornographic intent. You have contributed to dispelling this dangerous misunderstanding."

Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was a French painter, decorative artist and writer, who was an important figure in the transitional period between impressionism and modern art. He was associated with Les Nabis then the Symbolist movement, and then with a return to neo-classicism. His theories contributed to the foundations of cubism, fauvism, and abstract art. Following the First World War, he founded the Ateliers d'Art Sacré (Workshops of Sacred Art), decorated the interiors of churches, and worked for a revival of religious art.

Condition: The letter has a horizontal fold; otherwise very good.
