John Trumbull Autograph Document Signed "Jn. Trumbull." One page, 8" x 4.75", n.p., n.d. This document directs a box containing "impressions" of the engraving Declaration of Independence "to Saml. Williams Esq. 13 Tinsbury Square London."

    "Contains early . . . [illegible]
Fifty impressions of the Plate of the Declaration of Independence at 20 Doll[ar]s ea - 1000
Ten five proofs of the Same at 40 Doll[ar]s."

The total price equals $1,400, and the document ends, "With Keys & descriptions [signed] EE Jn. Trumbull."

Trumbull's Declaration of Independence is housed in the U.S. Capital Rotunda and depicts the five-man committee presenting the draft of the document to the Congress. For much of his life, the artist was in financial straits. In this instance, selling these "impressions" to Williams likely settled some of those debts. This document is on toned paper with some dampstaining to the lower left corner.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
