John Constable Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 4.5" x 7.5", n. p., n. d. John Constable (1776-1837) was an early British Romantic painter known for his landscapes, mostly of the Suffolk countryside where he grew up. In his early years, he studied at the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts in London. Mostly overlooked in his native England, he found success in France and was finally elected to the Royal Academy in 1829. He is very popular today and his works are among the most valuable.

Here, the artist writes to an unknown recipient a letter of thanks. He says, in full: "I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your polite note, and at the same time to offer my thanks to the comittee [sic] for the compliment paid me in making choice [?] of such works as relate to my profession." On the verso is a second, unfinished letter of recommendation of fellow artist, J. B. Dore.

Unevenly toned, especially along the upper and left edges. Edges show some minor chipping in places. Two small holes near the center of the page with no loss of paper or text. Overall the text, and especially Constable's signature, is very bright.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
