DescriptionJames McNeill Whistler Autograph Letters (2) Signed with Whistler's butterfly signature. Both are undated. In one, the artist notes that he had been so happy in showing the unnamed recipient "all my work, I quite forgot to ask about the Berlin Exhibition. May I look in tomorrow morning at 10:30 or 11 and get from you . . . [illegible]? I would not be five minutes." In the other to "My very dear Little Nora," Whistler writes that her letter was most "touching and I am devoted to you." Also included is a photograph of Whistler's Arrangement in Gray. The two letters exhibit mounting remnants on versos.
James Whistler began developing his butterfly signature - based on his initials -- in the 1860s during a period when he was interested in Asian art. The shape of the butterfly evolved over his lifetime as he applied the design to correspondence and paintings.
