    J. Goldsborough Bruff Autograph Rebus Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 10", Washington, March 20, 1845. Bruff's letter uses both written words and small, detailed drawings; in part:

"Dear Sir, I have completed the copy of 'Frye's Journal', which I hope will be satisfactory to you. Permit me, at the same time, likewise to express my gratitude for your kind and friendly aid in the other matter. 'A Friend in need is a Friend indeed' - an old but true adage. Do not hesitate to command me in any way I can serve you. I am Sir, with great respect, Your obliged, obedient & very humble servant, J. Goldsborough Bruff".

Joseph Goldsborough Bruff (1804-1889) served as a mapmaker for the U.S. Army and draftsman for the Navy. In 1849 he led an expedition out West, named the Washington City and California Mining Association. His journals and drawings from his travels, relating to trail life and gold country, are some of his most famous works. The style of rebus letters is based on the Latin phrase, Non verbis, sed rebus, which means "not by words but by things".

Condition: Lightly toned, light creasing from mail folds, adhesive ghosting on verso at top edge.
