DescriptionHenri Matisse Autograph Letter Signed "H Matisse." One page with integral blank, 5.25" x 8.25", in French, Paris, November 10, 1914. The great painter writes to an unknown recipient a quick letter of thanks.
In 1910, Henri-Émile-Benoît Matisse (1869-1954) withdrew from the Paris art scene and spent months at a time in Spain and Morocco, studying art from the Muslim world (predominantly Moorish). Revitalized, it was during this time (1913-1917) that he returned to Europe and entered his "innovative period," creating some of his more memorable works, such as "The Moroccans" and "Bathers by a River."
Light ink smudging at the lower left edge; very light toning. With a 7" x 5" reproduction of a pen and ink drawing of a younger Matisse, chest length, at work.
