Description
An Archive of Sixteen Typed Letters Signed, and More, from Hannes Bok
Hannes Bok. Archive of Correspondence with His Friend and Fellow Science Fiction Fan, Jack Cordes. Contents include sixteen fascinating Typed Letters Signed from Hannes Bok to Jack Cordes, dated between 1959 and 1962, all featuring a quick drawing by Bok, and most, if not all, from Bok's New York residence. Please visit our website at HA.com/6064-77065 for a complete listing of the letters, including sizes. At least two of Bok's letters mention the sale of Bok's Girl and Dino painting (to be offered in our March 1 Heritage Illustration Art auction) to Cordes for the sum of $100 in late 1960-early 1961. Bok refers to Cordes by a number of names in the letters, including Jack, Jacques, Bo, Beaubeau Cattyfeller, and would sometimes playfully address the letters to Cordes and his wife, Edna, as "Cordesesesesesesetc" or "JackEdna or Jedanack," among others. In the letters, Bok mentions a number of names and titles important to science fiction and fantasy fans, including Vernell Coriell, Tarzan, MAD magazine, Gerry de la Ree, Ray Bradbury, Martin Greenberg, Lester del Rey, Ray Palmer, Destination Moon, The Invisible Man Returns, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and more. In one letter, Bok makes mention of his idolization of Norman Rockwell, and often includes information about what he's reading or watching or working on at the moment. The letters are occasionally annotated with handwritten comments by Bok.
In addition to the sixteen letters, there are five Christmas cards designed by Bok from 1957-1962 (no card from 1958), four signed "Hannes" and one with a short note in blue ink. This unique archive also includes fourteen of Bok's original typed mailing envelopes, a two-page typed appreciation by Ray Bradbury (likely transcribed from a previous source) and Emil Petaja's Bokanalia Memorial Portfolio.
The letters are in generally fine condition, having been preserved by Jack Cordes in a three-ring binder for decades. An intimate archive, testament to a wonderful and obvious friendship between Bok and Jack Cordes, two of science fiction's first fans. From the collection of first fan, Jack Cordes.
